Hilton Caribe, Puerto Rico

The Hilton Caribe is a great place to stay in Puerto Rico.  It is very family friendly.  The beach has a barrier that prevents the waves from crashing into the swimming area so it is a great place for children to swim.  The hotels is situated in the Condada district very near old San Juan.   It has several restaurants including a Morton’s Steakhouse, Il Giordino La Trattoria, and Lemongrass Pan Asian Latino restaurants.  It also has two Starbuck’s one at the pool and one in the Lobby.  It is a short cab ride to old San Juan.

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

I recently stayed in Puerto Rico and spent time walking the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. The town was charming, full of restaurants, souvenir shops, and bars. The air is full of wonderful smells from the restaurants. Some old churches, museums and town squares also make up the town. There is a pigeon park where you can feed the pigeons and theyIMG_2694 will land on you for food. It can remind you of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” It is very picturesque and a great place to visit. I will follow with some great hotels to stay in while you visit Puerto Rico.  No visit to San Juan would be complete without seeing El Morro the fort built to protect the island.IMG_4505IMG_4492

Intercontinental San Juan

The hotel is a located in the Isla Verde area of San Juan.  It is a beautiful older hotel with a  clean beach.  Security was great.  Pool and grounds were beautiful.  Staff was gracious and very helpful.  The room was older but nicely appointed with comfortable beds. Food prices were expensive but that is the norm in Puerto Rico.  Staff were very helpful.  The hotel is very family friendly.

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas is truly a WOW.  The colors are cool and calm with pops of color in all the right places.  Dynamic dining, which I was skeptical about was actually good.  Sky diving simulator, surf simulator, bumper cars, the northstar, roller skating and trapeze training give active people lots to do!  Mama Mia the stage show was fantastic and the music still worms through my brain.  Two70 with it’s 3D, 2 story LCD screens made the dancers and singers look fantastic.  Really enjoyed the beer and food at Michael’s Pub another great place to chill.  Oh did I mention robot bartenders.   Would I recommend the ship ABSOLUTELY!!!  The artwork was great too!  Very whimsical and unexpected, like a penguin in a top hat in the elevator.  My one complaint is her stabilizers.  We had a bit of weather while on the ship and she really rocked and rolled.

What the Heck do you do with a Butler?

Now you frequently hear about resorts and cruise ships having butlers. I get questioned often on what would I do with a butler. After talking to many I find out they are a great perk to have. They will unpack your clothes, make dining room reservations, press your clothes, save you a beach chair, get your bubble bath ready, help you seal the deal by setting a romantic mood for proposal, or set up a romantic dinner from your favorite restaurant in your cabin or suite. Their goal is to pamper you.

Now even at Sandals resorts which include gratuities butlers are still given a little extra. It is suggested you tip $20 a day or more if your service is spectacular. We used them during a European cruise when we were exhausted from flying from the US. Our butler told us to order from any restaurant menu and he delivered everything course by course. We certainly didn’t feel like going to a formal dinner and he was wonderful. Whenever we needed anything he was there.

Sandals Grande Riviera

Sandals Grande Rivera is a mixture of loud and lively and quiet and beautiful. The resort is divided into two areas the seaside and the all butler hilltop. The hilltop butler suites have private swimming pools or shared swimming pools between two or four units. Shuttles or private golf carts driven by the butlers take you to the Great House which has shuttle buses to the beach. The grounds here are lavish with beautiful gardens everywhere. Leaving the hilltop to go to the seaside finds the Ochi Beach Club, water sports, gazebos over the water and more suites and villas and the restaurants. This is the lively and much louder area of the resort. There is also free golf (but you must take a caddy and pay them), free scuba diving if you are a certified diver.16 dining options, and Club Sandals their concierge suites, and entry level suites with beautiful garden views. There are two Red Lane Spas, 529 villas, luxury rooms and suites. Although this is a large resort you will have no problems finding a private area. for a romantic stroll. This is a great place for honeymooners or destination weddings.

Sandals Royal Plantation

This is an all butler suite resort.  It is intimate , only 74 suites.  All suites have an oceanview.  This resort is very quiet with 24 hour room service, beautiful gardens, afternoon tea and the only Champagne and Caviar bar, (extra charge) in the Caribbean.  It is an hour and 45 minutes from the Montego Bay airport and may be longer depending on traffic.  It has two private beaches (bring your water shoes as it is a little bit rocky),  This is NOT a place for anyone with mobility issues as there are no elevators and the rooms, restaurants and beach require the use of stairs.    Pool butlers bring your drinks to your lounge chair and each guest has a cell phone to use to reach their butler.  This resort has exchange privileges with it’s sister resort (right next door) Sandals Grande Riviera, but not the other way around.  If you want a quiet resort with outstanding service this is the one for you.

Sandals Resorts

Sandals resorts located in the Caribbean are great resorts. Each have a different vibe and therefore a different type of vacationer. I have just returned from a FAM in Jamaica and will address the different resorts there. What makes Sandals stand out? It’s there attention to detail and awesome service! It’s the location on some of the best beaches. It’s a family owned business and it shows. Not only do they take care of their employees they do a lot for the community through their Sandals Foundation.

Viking River Cruise

I took my first Viking River Cruise with my husband and a few friends.  We cruised from Passau Germany to Budapest, Hungary.  Viking did an outstanding job.  They found our little group as soon as we left the baggage area.  Our group of six were transported by van from the Munich airport.  Even though the weather wasn’t perfect they made sure they accommodated their passengers.  The food was good, the headphones they used for tours were fantastic, and the staff went beyond the call of duty at times.  The included shore excursions were very good, escorted by local guides who spoke English well.  My only complaint would be that the night time entertainment left something to be desired.  Most nights it was a piano player, sometimes accompanied by our Cruise Director David.  It was good for a night or two but than was old.  The two nights we had local entertainment was very good.  That being said we are already planning which river we will sail next because we absolutely loved our trip and Viking River Cruises.  Viking also seemed to own the Danube.  They appeared to have the best docks in the cities we visited.

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is sometimes the hardest thing to sell as a travel consultant yet it can be the best investment one can make. I can’t tell you how many times people need to make a claim. I have a client who put a large downpayment on a trip, I quoted him insurance he didn’t want it, a couple of months after the deposit his wife became ill and after hospital bills wanted to cancel the trip. He knew he wouldn’t get a lot of money left and was sorry he didn’t get insurance. Another case a couple was going to the Dominican Republic, I offered insurance and he didn’t want it. His girlfriend broke up with him and now he didn’t want to go, luckily he hadn’t made final payment yet so he purchased the insurance. Once he couldn’t find anyone else to go with, he filed a claim and received his money back. Another client purchased a cruise two weeks before sailing, wouldn’t buy the insurance, than became ill with pneumonia one week before the trip. They lost 10,000. This just covers trip cancellation, not the medical coverage trip insurance gives to a traveler. If you should need to be medically evacuated off a cruise ship the cost is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now you think you don’t need travel insurance?
